BOSTON -- Centurion Technologies has introduced MacShield Enhanced Edition, a new version of the software that protects a Mac's hard drive against any sort of unwanted change, including downloads, deletions, system settings changes, and even installed programs. It takes the basic feature set of Foundation Series MacShield adds the concept of a "Persistent Storage" area. For users who are selected by an administrator, their Home folder will be persistent, in that any changes to the area will be retained after a reboot. MacShield Enhanced Edition requires Mac OS X 10.3 and greater, and is priced at $59.99.
The original product, now dubbed Foundation Series MacShield, is still available, according to Centurion vice-president Keith Rickman. Upon reboot, MacShield restores the computer to its original state. This product is available for Mac OS versions ranging from 8 to 10.4, and looks to be the perfect solution for many environments, such as a computer lab. The product is in active use at school districts, and even Apple itself.
The Mac Observer Spin: We think this is a fantastic way to prevent all sorts of disasters, without having to go through the hassle of constantly restoring backups when a system gets messed up. Stay tuned for a review of the product once we get back from Macworld.
